Scotland’s Salmond condemns British government refugee inaction
Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond says that the British government “stands condemned” for failing to act on the current EU refugee crisis.
Salmond told RT that the UK is complicit in the crisis by “neither helping nor assisting” other countries dealing with the issue.
He added that the government could pay more attention to the asylum seekers by allocating more resources and that British Prime Minster David Cameron is not handling the issue properly
“Cameron is not helping. My granny used to say ‘if you can’t help, don’t hinder’ and David Cameron is neither helping nor assisting colleagues. He’s actually hindering the sort of agreement that would be necessary to address the overall questions,” he said during an interview aired Saturday.
In September, the British prime minister announced that his country would accept some 20,000 asylum seekers from Syria by the year 2020, which translates to a mere 12 refugees per day for the next five years.
“I think David Cameron and the UK government stands condemned of passing by on the other side while fellow human beings are [going through extreme situations] on the continent,” Salmon added.
He also blasted Hungary over mistreatment of the refugees, “There’s one country in Europe that’s handling things worse than David Cameron and that’s Hungary. I think they should feel ashamed of themselves.”
Hungary, is notorious for adopting harsh policies against refugees, a stance that has greatly infuriated the international community and rights groups.
On Friday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights lashed out at the government in Budapest for its mistreatment of asylum seekers.
“The images of women and young children being assaulted with tear gas and water cannons at Hungary’s border with Serbia were truly shocking,” said Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein.
