Europe’s Syria policies created Syrian refugee crisis: Minister
Syria's Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi has blamed the policies of European countries towards Syria for the ongoing crisis in the Arab country, urging them to fulfill their responsibility toward Syrian refugees streaming into the continent.
The Syrian minister said on Thursday that the countries that have made Syrians flee their homeland by sending terrorists and imposing economic sanctions on the Arab country must bear responsibility for their anti-Syria policies.
“Any Syrian abroad can return to his country anytime he wants to…The Syrian constitution does not permit the Syrian nationality being withdrawn from any Syrian,” Zoubi added.
Zoubi’s remarks come as Europe is facing the biggest refugee crisis in decades, with thousands of asylum seekers, many of them fleeing the violence in the areas hit by the Daesh militancy, trying to reach the western countries in the continent.
Multiple political attempts have been made by the international community to reach a solution for the conflict in Syria that has reportedly claimed the lives of over 250,000 and displaced some 11 million more since March 2011. All their attempts have failed so far.
On September 7, the UN special envoy to Syria said that many thousands more of Syrians will flee Daesh terrorists to Europe unless peace returns to the crisis-stricken country.
"Why are people leaving? Because they have lost hope after five years of endless conflict and they see only one winner, Daesh," Staffan de Mistura told reporters in Brussels on Monday.
"It is time to find a solution... otherwise there will not be any Syrians left," De Mistura warned.
According to the UN envoy, around one million people in western Syria are currently in danger. Such a large number could potentially engorge the flood of asylum seekers converging on Europe.
