Brexit dispute

The British prime minister says the UK has agreed to legally binding changes to the Brexit agreement with the European Union. Theresa May made the comments during a joint press conference with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in France. May stressed that the changes require the two sides to resolve the Irish border backstop with alternative arrangements. Juncker, for his part, expressed hope that the UK’s breakaway deal with the bloc will be concluded on time.

Israeli crimes

A young Palestinian man injured during an anti-Israeli demonstration in the east of the Gaza Strip has succumbed to his wounds. The Palestinian Health Ministry said 23-year-old Mousa Mohammad Mousa died after spending some 10 days in hospital. More than 250 Gazans have been killed in Israeli attacks since anti-occupation rallies began in March last year. Meanwhile, hundreds of people have attended a funeral for a Palestinian man who also died of his injuries he had sustained during an Israeli crackdown on protests. Palestinians have been holding weekly protests to demand the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

Algeria’s Bouteflika U-turn

Algeria's President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika has abandoned his plan to run for another term in office. Bouteflika also postponed the presidential election, pledging that a government reshuffle will happen very soon. The president said a new constitution will be submitted to national referendum and vowed political and economic reforms in the country. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia has also tendered his resignation, with Noureddine Bedoui being named the new premier. Algerian protesters took to the streets in the capital Algiers to celebrate the outcome of their weeks-long rallies.

Iran-Iraq ties

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says no third-party can undermine the relations between Tehran and Baghdad. Rouhani also stressed the need to enhance mutual relations between Iran and Iraq. Rouhani added that stability, security and democracy in Iraq is highly crucial for the Iranian people. Rouhani stressed that Tehran is well aware that a secure and stable Iraq will lead to a stable Middle East. He also has called for the fight against terrorism to ultimately uproot the scourge in the Middle East. Rouhani made the comments in a joint press conference with Iraqi President Barham Salih. The Iraqi president thanked the Iranians for their support during the war against the Daesh terror group.

Venezuela demonstration

The Venezuelan president has extended the closure of schools and businesses for another 24 hours due to the ongoing electricity blackout in the country. President Nicolas Maduro first announced the suspension after the nationwide power cut on Thursday. Meanwhile, the opposition-led National Assembly has declared a state of national alarm over what it described as the general calamity caused by the outage. The proposal was set forth by opposition leader Juan Guaido to seek international cooperation for resolving the current crisis. He also called for nationwide rallies to protest the crippling power cut. Guaido has accused the Maduro government of creating the electricity crisis. The government, however, accuses the US of masterminding the outage as an act of sabotage.

Boeing crash aftermath

Singapore becomes the latest country to ban the use of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, following the deadly crash of a plane of the same model in Ethiopia. Singapore's aviation regulator says it’s also suspending the use of other variants of the Boeing 737 MAX, to review the safety risk associated with its operation. China, Indonesia, South Korea, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Argentina, and Brazil have totally or partly banned operation of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 passenger jets as well. On Sunday, an aircraft of the model belonging to Ethiopian Airlines crashed only six minutes into a Nairobi flight. All 157 passengers and crew were killed. Less than six months ago, another aircraft of the same model, operated by Indonesia, crashed off Jakarta, killing all people on board.
