Ethiopia plane crash

All 157 passengers and crew members aboard a crashed Ethiopian Airlines flight to Kenya’s capital have been reportedly killed. Ethiopia’s state broadcaster said flight E-T 302 crashed near the town of Bishoftu, 62 kilometers southeast of the capital Addis Ababa. The incident happened six minutes after the plane took off from Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport. The airline says search and rescue operations are underway. In a tweet, Ethiopian prime minister expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The incident caused the delay and cancellation of most flights outside Addis Ababa.

Algeria politics

Algerian media say President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is expected to return to the country from Geneva later in the day. Bouteflika has been receiving medical treatment in the Swiss city over the past two weeks. Media reports say he’s expected to land in Algeria around noon local time. Bouteflika has faced mass protests at home over the past two weeks, as he seeks a fifth term in office. On Sunday, fresh rallies were held in the capital, Algiers. The protests have been led by students and continued despite Bouteflika’s pledge to limit his term, if re-elected in April. Protesters are critical of unemployment and corruption, and want him to quit. In an attempt to quell the rallies, authorities have ordered that the spring university holiday start ten days earlier.

Brexit uncertainty

British lawmakers are speaking of a possible defeat for the prime minister as her Brexit deal is put to the vote in parliament on Tuesday. The two key eurosceptic groupings in parliament say Theresa May will face a heavy defeat in the House of Commons if she asks legislators to vote again on the exit agreement without having secured any changes to it. Health Minister Matt Hancock has also said there would be total uncertainty if the MPs do not approve the deal. May's government is scrambling to secure last-minute changes to the Brexit deal with the European Union before Tuesday’s vote. If May fails, lawmakers are expected to force May to seek a delay to Brexit. The British premier has been in talks with the EU in search of changes to the deal to address the so-called backstop policy.

Iran-Iraq ties

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has hailed the Iraqi people and government for rejecting unilateral US sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Zarif made the remarks in a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Mohammed Ali al-Hakim. The top Iranian diplomat said the two sides are set to discuss a range of bilateral issues, including economic cooperation. President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to meet with high-ranking Iraqi officials, including President Barham Salih. The Iranian president will begin his three-day state visit on Monday, which is meant to improve economic and political ties between the two neighboring states.
