Deadly US airstrikes

US-led coalition airstrikes have reportedly killed dozens of civilians in eastern Syria. Local sources in the town of Hajin in Dayr al-Zawr province said at least 14 children and 9 women were among the dead. A UK-based monitoring group said the dead are all relatives of the Daesh terrorists. There has been no official confirmation of that so far. The United Nations says about 10,000 civilians are trapped in Hajin at the moment.

Hudaydah humanitarian fears

Saudi Arabia has launched what it calls a vast offensive to take control of the Yemeni port city of Hudaydah. Saudi-led forces say they have advanced toward the northern and western sides of the port city. Heavy clashes are also reportedly underway in the southern and eastern parts of the city. This comes as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees warned many people are trapped in Hudaydah.

US-China frictions

The US secretary of state has called on China to halt “militarization” of the South China Sea. Mike Pompeo made the comments during high-level talks with Chinese officials in Washington DC. Pompeo also criticized Beijing’s policies in East Asia and stressed that the US is not seeking a new Cold war with China. Pentagon Chief James Mattis and Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe also took part in the talks. The two sides discussed a whole range of issues including security and trade ties. Beijing said the ongoing trade war is hurting both sides.

Sri Lanka political crisis

Sri Lanka’s president has dissolved the parliament, calling general elections for January 5th. Maithripala Sirisena had earlier suspended the parliament. His new decision is expected to be challenged in court by election authorities who say the move is unconstitutional. He threw Sri Lanka into political turmoil last week after dismissing the country’s elected prime minister. The president later appointed his ally Mahinda Rajapaksa as the premier. This has outraged the ruling party of former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that holds the parliamentary majority. His supporters have held mass protests against what they call a coup against Wickremesinghe's elected government.

California blaze toll

Wildfires in the US state of California kill at least nine people and leave massive destruction. Wildfires began to burn in California on Thursday. The town of Paradise in the north of the state is the hardest-hit, where all deaths were reported. California officials say 35 people remain missing. They say only 5 percent of the fire was contained as of Friday night. Three firefighters were injured. State officials say the fire has blackened more than 90,000 acres, and is the most destructive in California’s history. They say the blaze is now burning out of control and heading into the city of Malibu. Residents there have been ordered to evacuate immediately.

Syria family reunion

Civilians rescued in a joint operation by Syrian and Russian forces earlier in the week have been reunited with their families. The 4 women and 15 children were held hostage by the Daesh terrorists since July. They were rescued near the city of Palmyra after being taken captive in Suwayda province where more than 200 people were killed. The captives were members of Syria’s Druze community.
