Afghanistan talks

The Russian capital, Moscow, hosts talks between the representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban to end years of conflict in Afghanistan. At the opening of the event, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the participants. He said both the Afghan government and the Taliban must work to solve the crisis. The Taliban militants have been engaged in a deadly insurgency against the Kabul government in the past two decades. The group regularly carries out attacks on government officials and security forces. Several attempts for establishing peace between the two sides have failed in the past with the Taliban opposing a lasting ceasefire.

Rohingya repatriation warning

UN aid agencies say the plan of repatriating Rohingya Muslims back to Myanmar is premature and the refugees are terrified about leaving neighboring Bangladesh. The group of 42 aid agencies, in a statement, described the push as dangerous, saying the refugees are distressed by the lack of information they have received. UN investigators say Myanmar’s military leaders should be investigated for genocide, but the country has rebuffed the calls. More than 720,000 Rohingya Muslims have taken shelter in neighboring Bangladesh since last August amid discrimination and military crackdown at home. In June, Myanmar signed a memorandum of understanding with the UN. It agreed to create conditions that would allow the safe and voluntary repatriation of the refugees.

Gaza funeral

Palestinians mourn the death of a young man killed by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip. They held a funeral ceremony for 20-year-old Mohammad A’ala Abou Sharbin from Rafah. The man was killed on Thursday. He was shot dead by Israeli forces along the so-called buffer zone in the Gaza strip. Israel has intensified its deadly crackdown on Palestinians since the start of the Great Return March protests on March 30. The latest death brings to 214 the number of Palestinians killed since then. The United Nations has on several occasions condemned Israel’s violent crackdown on Palestinian demonstrators.

Melbourne attack

An attack in the Australian city of Melbourne has left one person dead and two others wounded. The attacker ignited a truck loaded with gas bottles in the city center and then attacked bystanders with a knife. Police have said the incident was a terror act. Daesh has claimed responsibility for the attack. The suspect, identified as a Somali national was shot by police and later died of his wounds in hospital. Police declined to identify the man but said he was known to police and intelligence authorities because of family associations.

Bahrain fair vote call

A group of lawmakers in the UK, US, EU and Ireland have called on Bahrain to end repression and allow free and fair elections. In separate letters, the legislators said the upcoming parliamentary polls in the Persian Gulf country have been deprived of any legitimacy by a ban on opposition parties. They said countless Bahrainis have been incarcerated on charges that criminalize free expression and assembly. They said free and fair elections can only take place if citizens are able to express their views. The lawmakers noted that it will be difficult under these conditions for the international community to recognize the upcoming elections as legitimate. Bahrain is due to hold parliamentary polls on November 24.
