Call for intl. probe on Saudi journo

The UN special rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression calls for an immediate and independent international probe into the disappearance and the alleged murder of a Saudi journalist in Turkey. David Kaye said such an investigation can prevent the politicization of the case. He added that this probe will also demonstrate international abhorrence of crimes against journalists. Jamal Khashoggi was last seen visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday. Turkish investigators have concluded that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate.

Brazil presidential race

Near-final results show right-wing Congressman Jair Bolsonaro leading in Brazil's presidential election but the race is going to a runoff. With nearly all votes counted, Bolsonaro has received over 46 percent of valid votes, while his leftist rival Fernando Haddad has garnered nearly 29 percent. Bolsonaro and Haddad will contest in the second round on October 28. Bolsonaro is riding a wave of public anger over major political graft schemes and rising crime in the country. Brazil’s 147 million voters went to the polls on Sunday to choose the president, all 513 members of the lower house of Congress, two-thirds of the 81-member Senate, plus governors in all 27 states.

Blocking refugees

The Italian interior minister warns that his country will close its airports to unauthorized planes carrying refugees from Germany. Matteo Salvini issued the warning after Italian media reported that Germany's refugee agency plans to transfer asylum seekers to Italy via flights as of October 9. The two countries have been working on an agreement under which Germany would send back to Italy refugees who have already applied for asylum there. But the deal has not been signed. Italy wants to squeeze concessions from Germany over how to share responsibility for asylum seekers.

Poland protest

Protesters have marched through the Polish capital Warsaw demanding the investigation of pedophilia cases of Catholic Church clerics. Protesters carried banners reading "Hands off our children" and “Hiding pedophilia is a crime” as well as a map of the country on which places of the alleged abuses are marked. Protesters also demanded a detailed investigation that would provide concrete statistics on the number of abuses. The Catholic Church has been embroiled in crises involving sexual abuse of minors across the world.

China-US tensions

China’s foreign minister and his visiting US counterpart engage in a bitter exchange of criticism amid worsening bilateral relations. Pompeo was briefing Wang following his visit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He called for Beijing’s cooperation in denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Tensions have increased between US and China in recent months, with the two sides imposing several rounds of tit-for-tat tariffs on each other’s imports. Last week, US Vice President Mike Pence also accused China of making malign efforts to undermine President Donald Trump ahead of next month's congressional elections and of reckless military actions in the South China Sea.

UN climate warning

The United Nations has warned about a global climate chaos that is emerging in a much faster pace than initially anticipated. A new report by the Inter-governmental Panel for Climate Change says a paradigm shift is required to avert disaster. The IPCC calls for major transformation of the world economy in an unprecedented scale to limit global warming. The 400-page study recommends rapid and far-reaching changes in all aspects of society to maintain the one-point-five centigrade temperature cap that can help lower the risks of drought, floods, and poverty. The UN panel also pleads for a carbon neutral world by 2050 to avoid over-running the curb mark. The IPCC report is set for the agenda of a December climate summit in Poland to compel national carbon-cutting pledges.
