West Bank shooting

The Israeli military says two settlers have succumbed to injuries they sustained during a shooting incident in the occupied West Bank. According to a military spokesman, one injured Israeli is still being treated in hospital. The trio was allegedly attacked by a Palestinian at an industrial zone in the occupied territory. The cause of the shooting remains unclear. Israeli forces have launched a search operation for the alleged attacker. West Bank remains volatile amid Tel Aviv’s ever-growing settlement activities and Israeli settler attacks against the Palestinians.

Indonesia quake

The death toll from a devastating earthquake-tsunami that hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has risen to over 1,700.  Indonesia's disaster agency says as many as 5,000 people are still missing. The figure is based on estimates from local officials in two hard-hit districts. The exact figure, however, remains unclear since the areas are largely buried under mountains of mud and wreckage. The agency has also announced that large-scale searches would cease on Thursday. Emergency efforts, however, continue through the rubbles despite public health concerns. Rescuers have been vaccinated in the face of possible contamination from decomposing corpses. According to the United Nations, some 200,000 people are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.

Afghan violence

At least ten Afghan policemen have died in an attack by the Taliban in central Afghanistan. The militants ambushed a government building in Wardak province, setting it on fire. The attack sparked clashes with security forces which left officers dead in the city of Sayeed Abad. Among those killed is the city’s police chief. Local officials say the gunmen then raided several residential buildings and cut power to parts of the city. The militant attack comes as Afghanistan is gearing up for parliamentary elections set to be held in later this month.

Saudi journo killed in consulate: Turkish sources

Turkey’s ruling party says authorities have concrete information on the disappearance of dissident Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Justice and Development party believes Khashoggi has not left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. This comes as two sources close to the Turkish police claim that Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi mission. They say the murder was premeditated and that Khashoggi’s body was subsequently moved out of the building. Saudi Arabia has denied the reports as baseless. Riyadh says it allows Turkey to search its consulate. Khashoggi entered the mission on Tuesday but never came out. He had lived in self-exile in the US since Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman's rise to power last year. He was a harsh critic of Bin Salman's policies.

Brazil vote begins

In Brazil, voting has begun in one of the most polarizing presidential elections in the country’s history. Some 147 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots. Far-right lawmaker from the Social Liberal Party Jair Bolsonaro is expected to garner most of the votes. If he gets more than 50 percent of the votes to lead the field of 13 candidates, he will win the presidency outright. Otherwise, a run-off will be held later this month.

Haiti quake

At least 11 people are reported dead after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Haiti on Saturday. According to the US geological survey, the powerful quake shook the northwestern part of the country, and was lightly felt in the capital Port Au Prince as well. Haitian President Jovenel Mois has urged the residents to stay calm, saying the authorities are assisting those in need. There have also been reports of injuries, but the exact number is still unknown. Haiti is prone to earthquakes and its people are still recovering from the aftermath of a catastrophic temblor that killed 200,000 in 2010.

North Korea-US summit

South Korea says Washington and Pyongyang have agreed to arrange a second summit between the leaders of the two countries soon. Office of the South Korean President made the announcement after the US secretary of state met with Kim Jong-un during his trip to North Korea. The office said Mike Pompeo and Kim negotiated the issue of inspecting the denuclearization process as well as the measures the US should take. Trump and Kim held their first summit on June 12. They signed an agreement that urged Washington to provide security guarantees to Pyongyang. In return, Kim reaffirmed his commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. The US, however, says sanctions on the North remain in place for now. The policy has infuriated the North.
