Indonesia quake

Indonesian rescuers digging through the rubbles in the aftermath of a quake and tsunami have issued a fresh public health warning. The alarm comes as more decaying corpses were unearthed from beneath the ruined city of Palu, which could lead to disease spreading. Rescue teams have also been vaccinated in the face of possible contamination from the decomposing bodies. The death toll has risen to well over 1,600, with more than 1,000 people still remained missing in Palu on Sulawesi island. Hopes of finding anyone alive have faded, though the search has not been officially called off. The United Nations says nearly 200 people are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Opposing Afghan war

A new survey in the United States shows that the number of Americans opposed to their country’s war in Afghanistan has grown over the past years. According to the survey, nearly half of American adults said that they believe their country failed to achieve its goals in Afghanistan. Only a third of those surveyed said the US had been successful. Previous polls conducted in 2014 and 15 also showed a negative public opinion about the success of the Afghan war. The new survey, however, found that the public opinion has become more divided on whether it was a right decision to use military force in Afghanistan. The US invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of its so-called war on terror. But, seventeen years on, the Taliban and al-Qaeda militants remain active, while new groups such as Daesh have emerged there too.

Brazil presidential race

147 million voters in Brazil are set to go to the polls on Sunday. The leftist Workers’ Party has played a major role in Brazilian politics since 2003. But with corruption scandals and a surge in popularity of the rightist parties, things could change.

Gaza funeral

Palestinians hold a funeral procession for a 12-year-old boy killed during Friday’s anti-occupation protests. Faris al-Sersawi was among the three Palestinians killed by Israeli forces last Friday. They had taken part in the weekly rallies dubbed the Great Return March. More than 120 also got injured as Israeli troops used tear gas and live ammunition during the demonstration. Palestinians have been holding the protests since March 30. Nearly 200 Palestinians have been killed and some 20,000 others injured since then. The rallies are held to demand the Palestinians’ right of return to their homeland.

Missing Saudi journalist

Turkish prosecutors have launched an investigation into the disappearance of a prominent Saudi journalist days after he went missing in Istanbul. Saudi Arabia said it would allow Turkey to search its consulate in Istanbul. Jamal Khashoggi entered the diplomatic mission on Tuesday but never came out. Turkish officials believe he is still inside. But Saudi Arabia claims he exited the building shortly after his visit. Khashoggi’s friends and relatives as well as human rights groups have warmed that he could have been detained by Riyadh. Human Rights Watch says Saudi Arabia has to produce evidence for its claim that Khashoggi left the consulate. Khashoggi left the kingdom last year for the US after Riyadh stepped up its crackdown on political opponents.

Madrid protest

Spaniards have taken to the streets in the capital to call for unity in the face of Catalonia's independence drive. Protesters chanted slogans against Catalonia's bid as they marched outside the parliament building. They also called for the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. They demanded an immediate election to replace the premier. The demonstrators called Sanchez the “illegitimate” prime minister of Spain. Sanchez's socialist government faces scandals regarding its ministers. It is also under pressure after clashes broke out on the first anniversary of Catalonia’s independence referendum. The tensions re-ignited secession sentiments in Catalonia.
