Amnesty criticizes Greece

Amnesty International has warned about dire conditions of women and children in Greek refugee camps. Kumi Naidoo made the remarks after visiting Greece’s biggest refugee camp on the island of Lesbos. The amnesty chief urged the European Union to help Greece deal with the problem. He also called on Athens to move the asylum seekers to safer and more hygienic places. According to the United Nations refugee agency, more than half of the refugees arriving in Greece are women and children. The UNHCR said several of them lost their lives as a result of the alarming humanitarian conditions in Greek camps.

US trade deficit

A US government report reveals that the country’s trade deficit has dramatically increased. The US Commerce Department’s report suggested that the country’s trade deficit ballooned in August to its highest level in six months as exports of tariff-targeted goods fell. The report also showed US businesses rushing to import goods before tariffs hit China in late August and September. Economists have warned that poor trade numbers could slow the US economic growth in the third quarter. The latest round of US tariffs targeted 200-billion dollars of Chinese products. China hit back by imposing levies on 60-billion dollars of US products.

Kavanaugh nomination

US President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee feels almost certain to have the votes he needs for a lifetime appointment to the country’s highest court. The Senate, where the Republicans have a two-seat majority, holds a debate over Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

EU blasts US Israel support

EU legislators accuse US President Donald Trump of facilitating Israel's human rights violations against Palestinians. The bloc's lawmakers have been debating Trump's move to scrap US aid for Palestinian refugees, with some describing the move as criminal. Jerome Hughes reports.

Yemen anti-Saudi protest

Yemenis have once again taken to the streets of the capital Sana’a to denounce Saudi Arabia’s deadly war on their country. The rally was called by the popular Ansarullah movement. Press TV's correspondent Mohammad al-Attab reports.

EU-Iran trade ties

France says the European Union should use the ongoing row with the US over the Iran nuclear deal as a chance to increase the bloc's financial autonomy. French Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the EU can use the US sanctions on Iran as an opportunity to have its own independent financial institutions. He also urged the bloc to stop following Washington’s lead in its trade relations with the world. He said it is not up to Washington to decide whether Europe is allowed to trade with Iran. The US sanctions following its unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal has kept many European firms from working with Tehran. The US has threatened that the companies doing business with Iran would lose the American market and face penalties.

Anger at US sanctions

Supporters of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro have poured into the streets of the capital Caracas to protest against what they called the US-backed imperialism. Thousands marched through downtown and remembered late former president Hugo Chavez, six years after his last public speech during the 2012 electoral campaign. The demonstrators slammed the United States for imposing sanctions on Venezuela.
