Tehran summit

The presidents of Russia and Turkey arrive in the Iranian capital, Tehran, to attend a trilateral summit with President Hassan Rouhani. The three presidents will discuss the ongoing conflict in Syria’s Idlib province among other issues. Iranian officials say senior representatives of the three countries have held talks and finalized a document over the Syria crisis. They say this will be announced as the final statement of the summit upon the approval of the three presidents. Idlib is the last major part of Syria still under the control of foreign-backed armed groups. The Syrian army and its allies are preparing for an operation to liberate the province.

Yemen children plight  

The United Nations Children’s Fund says children are suffering the most from malnutrition triggered by the ongoing Saudi war on Yemen. UNICEF is calling for an end to the war. UNICEF says currently, 1.8 million Yemeni children are in a dire state of hunger with acute malnutrition. Humanitarian aid groups have also reported a rise in the number of malnourished children in Yemen.

Basra protests

Violent protests again rock the Iraqi city of Basrah. Several days of unrest in the oil-rich city has left ten people dead and dozens injured. Demonstrations started because of a lack of basic services and high unemployment levels, which residents blame on government corruption. Iraq’s parliament has announced an emergency meeting to discuss the situation.

Rouhani stresses importance of fight against terrorism in Syria    

The Iranian president says Tehran, Moscow and Ankara must continue cooperating until peace and security is fully restored in Syria. Hassan Rouhani says joint efforts of Iran, Russia and Turkey have helped put an end to the bloodshed in Syria. He says military intervention will only exacerbate the violence in Syria, adding that Iran advocates dialog between different Syrian factions. He says the fight against terror in Syria must not leave a scorched earth. Rouhani says cooperation with the Syrian government is the most effective way to address the issue of terrorism in Syria. The Iranian president made the statements at a trilateral summit with his Russian and Turkish counterparts.

Militant provocation in Syria

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that terrorists in Syria plan provocative measures through the use of chemical weapons. Putin was speaking at the Tehran summit. He said more than 90 percent of Syria’s territory and over 141 cities have been liberated from terrorists. The Russian leader noted that his country has proposed an international plan for the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said recent developments in Idlib have reached a truly dangerous level. He warned that any attack on the Syrian province will lead to disaster. He also slammed the US, saying Ankara is extremely annoyed by Washington’s support for YPG forces.
