U-turn on embassy move

The Israeli Prime Minister has ordered the closure of Israel's embassy in Paraguay. Benjamin Netanyahu issued the order after Paraguay said it will move its embassy back to Tel Aviv from Jerusalem al-Quds. Palestinian Foreign Affairs Minister Ryiad al-Maliki hailed the Latin American country’s decision. Maliki said Palestinians will immediately open an embassy in Paraguay. The country had moved its embassy to al-Quds after US president Donald Trump did so on May 14. Other world countries do not recognize Israel’s claim to the city.

Senior aide blasts Trump

Top members of Donald Trump's administration are reportedly alarmed by the US president's “erratic and amoral behavior”. That’s according to an editorial by an anonymous senior official published in the New York Times. The article reveals, senior officials in the Trump administration are working to frustrate parts of his agenda and “worst inclinations”. The article says officials actively work to insulate themselves from Trump's adversarial, petty and ineffective leadership style. The US president has slammed the article as gutless. The revelations come ahead of the publication of a bombshell book about Trump’s presidency. The book, entitled FEAR, depicts Trump as a paranoid and impulsive leader.

Trump not ‘reliable’: Trudeau

The Canadian prime minster says US President Donald Trump cannot be relied on to play by the rules as they are laid out. Justin Trudeau renewed his demands for a dispute resolution mechanism in a new deal which is expected to replace NAFTA. He added, keeping this mechanism ensures that rules are actually followed by all parties. Trudeau also said, he doesn’t need to go to Washington for NAFTA talks for the time being. Negotiations to revamp NAFTA have been going on for months. Last week, Trump warned he could proceed with a deal with Mexico alone and levy tariffs on Canadian products if Ottawa does not come on board.

Israeli home demolitions

The Israeli military has demolished two more Palestinian homes in Jerusalem al-Quds under the pretext of construction without permission. Palestinians say the move is part of a larger plan to force them out of their city to make further room for the settlers.

Fight against terrorism

Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman says the fight against terrorism in Syria will continue until the full elimination of terrorists. Maria Zakharova called on the West not to break up the fight against terrorism by sending conflicting signals. Zakharova underlined the need for countering threats posed by militants groups in Syria’s northwest, especially Idlib province. She also defended Russia’s airstrikes against positions of the terrorists in Idlib on Tuesday. Zakharova pledged that Russia will act in the same way in the near future.

Japan earthquake

More than 30 people are missing after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake rocks Japan. The quake happened in the northern island of Hokkaido. It killed two people and hurt more than 100 others. The earthquake cut power supplies to nearly three million homes and a nuclear power plant. It also triggered landslides and brought down several houses but posed no tsunami risk. Authorities cancelled flights grounded and disrupted train services after the incident. Japan sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where many of the world's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are recorded.

Yemen retaliation

Yemeni forces have carried out a drone attack on an airport in Saudi Arabia. Yemeni media say the strike on Abha International Airport in Asir province interrupted flights to and from the airport. The same airport came under a Yemeni drone attack back in May. However, Riyadh said its air defense units had intercepted the unmanned aerial vehicle. Yemeni Ansarullah forces have conducted attacks, including drone and missile strikes, on Saudi targets in retaliation for Riyadh’s air raids on Yemeni people. Saudi Arabia launched its war on Yemen in March 2015. Since then, nearly 15,000 Yemenis have been killed.

China-Britain row

Beijing has criticized a British navy warship entering Chinese territorial waters around the disputed Paracel archipelago in the South China Sea. China’s foreign ministry said the warship entered the area without permission on August 31. Beijing said China’s navy warned the British side to leave and immediately stop such kinds of provocative actions. The British challenge to China’s control of the hotly-contested waterway comes after the United States said it would like to see more international participation in Freedom of Navigation Operations in the South China Sea. Beijing says it is entitled to build on its territories and says the facilities are for civilian use and necessary self-defense purposes. China blames Washington for militarizing the region with its freedom of navigation patrols.
