US Syria threats

The Unites States has threatened to take measures against Syria ahead of a reported Syrian military operation in the country’s southwest. The State Department expressed concern over what it called an impending military operation in one of the country’s de-escalation zones. It added that Washington would take firm and appropriate measures in case of what it described as ceasefire violation. Earlier, a war monitoring group reported that Syrian troops were moving toward the southern province of Dara’a after their successes against terrorists in the south of Damascus. Syrian aircraft have also dropped leaflets calling on militants to lay down their arms. The Syrian army has dealt heavy blows to Daesh and foreign-backed militants around the capital over the past months.

Israeli shoot-to-kill policy

A Palestinian man has succumbed to wounds he sustained during anti-Israel protests in the Gaza Strip several days before. Officials say Hussein Salem was injured after Israeli troops used live rounds and tear gas on Palestinians. The 41-year-old is said to have been a vendor NOT involved in the demonstrations. At least 109 Palestinians were also injured on Friday in the latest wave of rallies. The UN accuses Tel Aviv of using wholly disproportionate force in Gaza. The latest death brings to 122 the number of Palestinians killed since the protests dubbed the Great March of Return erupted on March 30. The deadliest clashes occurred on May 14, the day the US was relocating its embassy to the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

Kim-Trump summit

The US President says a summit with the North Korean leader could still go ahead, a day after Donald Trump called off the planned meeting. Trump wrote on his twitter page that there were productive talks between Washington and Pyongyang about reinstating the summit. If the two sides reach an agreement, the meeting will be held in Singapore on June 12. South Korea welcomed Trump's comments about holding the meeting with Kim Jong-un. On Thursday, Trump cancelled the summit, citing what he called North Korea’s open hostility. But North Korea later said it was willing to talk at any time in any form.

Yemen retaliation

Yemen’s Ansarullah fighters and allied army units launch fresh attacks against Saudi Arabia in retaliation for Riyadh’s onslaught. In the most recent attack, four Saudi soldiers were sniped down in the Najran region. Ansarullah forces also destroyed Saudi military vehicles in rocket attacks. The Yemeni air force announced that its drones targeted a Saudi airport in the region of Asir and damaged parts of it. Yemeni forces have stepped up their attacks against Saudi Arabia. They say such strikes are the only means to make Riyadh stop its deadly war, ongoing since March 2015.

Palestinian funeral

Palestinian mourners have held a funeral in Gaza for a protester shot by Israeli forces several days ago. 41-year-old Hussein Ewaida succumbed to his wounds sustained during an anti-Israel protest in the Gaza Strip on May 14. His death brought to 122 the number of Palestinians killed since the protests dubbed the Great March of Return began on March 30. The deadliest clashes occurred on May 14, the day the US relocated its embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem al-Quds. The United Nations accused Israel of using wholly disproportionate force.

France protest

People in France hold nationwide rallies to protest President Emmanuel Macron’s policies. France's main far-left party, the CGT trade union and some eighty other organizations led the protests. The demonstrators spoke out against Macron’s reform plans. They expressed their anger at what they called staff shortages at hospitals, limited admissions at universities and lack of police in tough neighborhoods. Unions have staged several nationwide strikes since the start of the year. Employees of the national railway company have had the longest ones. They’re worried about Macron’s plan to sell the company to the private sector.

EU-UK Brexit row

The EU’s chief negotiator in Brexit talks says the UK must accept the negative consequences of leaving the bloc. Michel Barnier said London needs to face up to the reality that the EU cannot share a decision-making autonomy with UK as an outsider. Barnier berated what he called the blame game approach between EU and the UK as pointless. He warned London that failing to agree a deal on the governance of a withdrawal treaty which preserves the primacy of the EU court would mean no treaty and no transition period. Barnier described British delays in submitting its proposal on trade relationship as a game of hide and seek. The former French minister called for swift political level talks to clarify the key areas where uncertainty remains.
