N Korea still open to talks

Pyongyang says it is still open to talks with Washington after US President Donald Trump called off a summit with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un. North Korean officials expressed willingness to sit for face-to-face negotiations at any time to resolve ongoing crisis on the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang also described the cancellation of the summit as unexpected and extremely regrettable. Trump cancelled the meeting with Kim due to what he called Pyongyang's hostility. Trump’s decision came shortly after North Korea dismantled its nuclear test site.

Iran’s expectations

Representatives of the countries which are members to the joint commission of the Iran nuclear deal or JCPOA will meet in the Austrian capital Vienna on Friday. Ahead of the meeting, Iran's deputy foreign minister and senior nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi urged European signatories to do their utmost to keep the deal financially and economically beneficial for Iran.

Israeli demolitions

Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled in favor of demolishing a Palestinian Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank. In its ruling, the court said there is no legal justification to prevent the demolition of the village which is home to around 180 residents. It noted that the village was built without the relevant building permits. The office of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the verdict saying it was in line with Israel’s policy of ethnic cleansing. The decision is likely to be met with anger by some European governments, which had launched a campaign to save the village. Human rights groups say Israel’s relentless demolition drive is aimed at uprooting Palestinians from their territories and seizing more land for the expansion of settlements.

Russia reaction

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, says North Korea has fulfilled its promises aimed at resolving the decades-old row with Washington. Putin made the comments in a joint press conference with his French counterpart, Emanuel Macron. His remarks came after North Korea destroyed its nuclear test site ahead of a planned summit with the US president. Donald Trump cited hostility from Pyongyang as the reason behind the cancelation of the meeting.

Syrians returning home

Government troops raise the Syrian flag over buildings in the Hajar al-Aswad district south of the capital Damascus. The strategic area was retaken from Daesh terrorists several days ago. As our correspondent Zahra al-Derzi reports, residents who’d fled Hajar al-Aswad long before are now returning to check on their homes.

Talks on Iran deal

Signatories to the Iran nuclear deal are set to hold a meeting in the Austrian capital, Vienna, to discuss the future of the agreement after the US withdrawal. Members to the Joint Commission of the nuclear deal, namely China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Iran, will attend the meeting. The talks come over two weeks after US President, Donald Trump, officially pulled out of the deal. Germany, Britain, France, and the European Union have said they would remain in the agreement. Meanwhile, Iran has called on Europe to present an economic package by the end of May. The package is intended to compensate for Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement. Iran’s senior nuclear negotiator, Abbas Araqchi, urged the European signatories to keep the deal beneficial for Iran.

US Bahrain arms sales

Human Rights Watch has demanded that the United States reject arms sales to Bahrain. HRW says Bahrain has a poor human rights record as it cracks down on its Shia community. The rights group accuses Bahraini authorities of seeking to silence dissent. It says the US administration shuts its eyes to Manama’s stifling of its own people and depriving the opposition of their citizenship. HRW also accuses Bahrain of carrying out unfair trials of civilians in Kangaroo courts. It says Manama is harassing, intimidating, imprisoning and prosecuting rights defenders and their family members. The administration of Donald Trump plans to sell a one-billion-dollar package of arms to Bahrain.
