Iran nuclear deal

Russia has expressed hope that the US president would make a balanced decision towards Iran’s nuclear deal with the P5+1 group of countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it’s very important to preserve the nuclear deal in its current form and participation of the US will be a very significant factor in this regard. Lavrov’s comments come as Donald Trump has once again accused Tehran of not living up to the spirit of the nuclear deal. The US president is expected to announce his decision on whether to certify the agreement next week. This is while the International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly verified Iran’s adherence to the terms of the nuclear deal known as the JCPOA.

Nobel Peace Prize

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, also known as ICAN, has won the 2017 noble peace prize. Nobel Committee President Reiss-Andersen made the announcement during a ceremony in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. She said this year’s peace prize is a call on all states to eliminate nuclear weapons. Reiss-Andersen added that the prize was a tribute to everyone involved in nuclear disarmament. She described this year's Nobel Peace Prize as a reminder for all countries to stick to their disarmament commitments. ICAN was launched in 2007 and has partner organizations in 101 countries. It works to promote the full implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Talabani laid to rest

The funeral ceremony of former Iraqi president Jalal Talabani has been held in the city of Sulaimaniyah. The long-time Kurdish leader died at the age of 83 in Germany. He was transported to a Berlin hospital after his health deteriorated before the secession referendum in northern Iraq. His death comes amid disputes over the Kurdish vote that was held on September 25. Talabani served as Iraq's president from 2005 to 2014, following the downfall of the country’s former dictator Saddam Hussain in 2003. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif attended his funeral.

Rohingya Muslims plight

The United Nations aid chief has slammed the Myanmar government for not allowing the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the persecuted Rohingya Muslims. Mark Lowcock made the comment during a press conference held after his visit to Rohingya camps in Bangladesh. Recounting harrowing experiences of the refugees, the UN official said the Rohingya mass migration has not stopped yet. Lowcock noted that Rohingya women witness their children and husbands being killed by Myanmar forces. The United Nations has been outspoken against the Myanmar army’s brutal killing of minority Muslims, but has failed to take any concrete measures to stop the violence. The world body has labeled the military operations as ethnic cleansing.

‘Now is time to ban nukes’: ICAN

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, also known as ICAN, has said now is the time to scarp the weapons of mass destruction. The statement came after ICAN won the 2017 noble peace prize. The group has also urged world nations to oppose nuclear weapons while warning that the specter of nuclear warfare is looming large. ICAN described as misguided and dangerous the claim by some governments that nuclear weapons are a legitimate and essential source of security. The Nobel Peace Prize winner also said the world’s current situation is tense, adding that fiery rhetoric could lead to unspeakable horror. ICAN has hailed its winning of the Nobel Prize as a great honor, adding that the award is a tribute to millions of people who have loudly protested against nuclear arms and have called for them to be fully abolished.

Saudi war on Yemen

Saudi Arabia has carried out fresh attacks in Yemen, killing several people and causing more material damage. One attack carried out by Saudi forces from across the border killed three Yemenis in the Munabbih district of Sa'ada province. Meanwhile, Saudi warplanes targeted a vehicle in a different part of the same district, killing three more Yemenis, including a child. Saudi Arabia began its devastating war on Yemen in 2015 with the stated aim of reinstating former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to power. The war has drawn widespread condemnation from various rights groups. Earlier, the United Nations blacklisted Saudi Arabia for killing and maiming children in Yemen.

Supporting Iraq’s integrity

The Iranian foreign minister has reaffirmed that Iraq’s territorial integrity must be preserved. Mohammad Javad Zarif was speaking on the sidelines of a funeral ceremony for late Kurdish leader and former Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in the Iraqi city of Sulaimaniyah. Zarif described Talabani as the symbol of the Arab nation’s unity, calling on Kurdish people to follow his path. The top Iranian diplomat noted that the Islamic Republic will remain the lifelong friend of all Iraqis and its Kurdish population. Zarif’s comments come amid concerns about the consequences of the recent secession referendum in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The Iraqi government, along with Iran and some other nations, has warned that the move could fuel tensions in Iraq and further destabilize the wider region.
