Iran team drawn in Group A of WTF taekwondo world cup

Iran men’s national taekwondo team has been drawn in Group A of the 2015 WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships, which is scheduled to be held in Mexico this week.

During the official draw conducted in Mexico City on Monday, the Islamic Republic of Iran was put in Group A of the group stage of the forthcoming sports event, and joined Azerbaijan, Belgium and Uzbekistan.

Group B consists of Mexico, Russia, South Korea and the United States.

The top two teams in each group (eight teams in total) will qualify for the knockout stage.

The 2015 WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships starts in Mexico on December 8, and concludes on December 9. The competitions will be staged at the Sala de Armas Gymnasium in Mexico City.

The names on the roster of Iran men’s national taekwondo team include Armin Hadipour, Mohammad Kazemi, Abolfazl Yaqoubi, Masoud Hajizavareh, Saeed Rajabi and Omid Amidi.

The Iranian outfit is under the tutelage of Bijan Moghanloo as head coach, and Mehdi Bibak and Mehrdad Yousefi coach the Iranian taekwondo practitioners.

Iranian taekwondo fighters collected three medals, among them one gold, at the 2015 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Grand Prix Final in Mexico.

On December 6, Sajjad Mardani bagged the gold medal in the seniors male over 80-kilogram weight division after triumphing over France’s M'Bar N'Diaye 2-0 in the final contest of the category held at the Sala de Armas Gymnasium.

The achievements came a day after Farzan Ashourzadeh Fallah earned the silver medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran in the seniors male minus 58-kilogram weight class after he conceded defeat to Kim Tae-hun, a contestant from South Korea, 2-3 in the final.

Masoud Hajizavareh also managed to defeat Russian taekwondo athlete Albert Gaun 5-4 in his final challenge, and grabbed the bronze for Iran.

The 2015 WTF World Taekwondo Grand Prix Final started in Mexico City on December 5, and finished the next day.
