A terrorist attack at a railway station in the capital city of the Pakistani province of Balochistan has left two dozen people killed and scores more wounded.
The perpetrator of the attack, who died in the blast, blew up the bomb at the train station in Quetta on Saturday.
Officials said at least 24 people, including a dozen soldiers and six railway staff, were killed and about 50 others, some in critical condition, were wounded.
Hamza Shafqaat, a senior government administrator, said the terror attack took place as passengers were awaiting the train going to the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
Heavy gunfire was heard after the attack. CCTV footage showed noticeable damage to the station at the blast scene and passengers’ baggage left behind.
Balochistan’s Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the deadly railway station attack.
Islamabad faces long-term resistance from local militant groups pursuing an independent state in Pakistan’s southwest region. In the past, the armed forces of the country carried out strikes against the separatists’ “bases” in the region.
Pakistan has witnessed terrorist groups’ attacks and militancy within its borders for decades.
Saturday’s attack takes place as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Gen. Syed Asim Munir left Tehran after an official visit for mediation to discuss advancing the consultative process aimed at supporting peace and stability in the region and reaching a conclusive agreement between Iran and the United States.
The Pakistani military’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement on Saturday, describing Munir’s visit as “short but highly productive.”
