Iran says US committing ‘crimes against humanity’ in Cuba

A view of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the ongoing interference of the US administration in Cuba's internal affairs, including illegal sanctions, provocative actions, political pressure, and military threats against the Caribbean nation.

In a statement released on Saturday, the ministry said that US economic and commercial sanctions imposed on Cuba following the 1959 Cuban Revolution constitute "a violation of Cuba's national sovereignty and the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, particularly the principle of respect for the right of peoples to self-determination."

The statement added that the sanctions have led to "grave violations of human rights of the Cuban people and widespread economic damage to the country."

The Iranian Foreign Ministry described the illegal and inhumane US sanctions against Cuba over the past 66 years—the longest sanctions regime against any country—as "a crime against humanity due to their extensive effects and consequences on the human rights of the Cuban people."

It added that "the US administration must be held accountable for committing these crimes."

Regarding recent escalations, the ministry noted that the US administration's intensification of sanctions and imposition of a naval blockade against Cuba in recent months, accompanied by "provocative and baseless claims" against the country, are "another example of US lawbreaking and bullying" that must be condemned by all states and the United Nations.

"The will of nations to preserve their independence and national dignity cannot be broken by sanctions and threats," the ministry said.

Expressing full solidarity with the government and people of Cuba, Iran emphasized "the necessity of respecting national sovereignty, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and putting an end to unilateral coercive measures against developing countries."

Cuba, like Iran, has long been a target of illegal US sanctions, blockades, and destabilization efforts aimed at undermining its sovereignty and revolutionary principles.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez has said the United States is fabricating a "fraudulent case" as a pretext for a Cuba invasion.

Rodriguez dismissed a recent report run by Axios, claiming Cuba had acquired military-grade drones to stage attacks on US targets.

US officials, while hyping the so-called "threat," were forced to admit that Cuba poses no imminent danger and that its military capabilities do not compare to historical flashpoints like the 1962 missile crisis.

They also acknowledged that Havana cannot close key waterways in the manner that Iran has heroically defended the Strait of Hormuz against US provocations.

Cuban officials, including Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, have denounced the Axios report as part of a fabricated narrative designed to justify escalated sanctions, economic warfare, and potential military intervention under the current US administration's maximum pressure campaign.

This follows a pattern of US imperialism, where Washington routinely invents pretexts to target independent nations resisting its hegemony.
