The administration of United States President Donald Trump has intensified efforts to pressure Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour into withdrawing his candidacy for the vice-presidency of the UN General Assembly.

In a cable dated Wednesday, US diplomats in its embassy in the occupied Al-Quds are instructed to deliver the message that Mansour's general assembly bid "fuels tensions", risks undermining Trump's Gaza "peace plan" and would therefore face consequences from Washington if it went ahead, Reuters reported.

"To be clear, we will hold the PA responsible if the Palestinian delegation does not withdraw its VPGA candidacy," the cable, marked sensitive but unclassified, said, referring to the Palestinian Authority.

Among the talking points provided in the cable to US diplomats, the State Department's September 2025 decision to waive visa sanctions for Palestinian officials assigned to the Palestinian UN mission in New York was also noted.

The UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote on June 2 to elect a president and 16 delegations that will serve as vice presidents.

The Palestinian Authority represents the Palestinian people at the United Nations. The Palestinian delegation, officially known as the State of Palestine, does not have full membership status and has no vote.

Palestine and the Vatican are the only two “permanent non-member observer states” at the UNGA.
