A senior Iranian official has warned that global energy flows and international trade will be further disrupted with "a single move" in the event of a foolish mistake by the United States and Israel.
Ali Akbar Velayati, who serves as a senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, made the remarks on Sunday, noting that the unified command of the Resistance Front views the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait as equivalent in importance to the Strait of Hormuz.
He further emphasized that any “foolish” miscalculation by the White House could quickly lead to severe disruptions in global energy supply routes and commercial shipping.
“If the White House dares to repeat its foolish mistakes, it will soon realize that the flow of global energy and trade can be disrupted with a single move,” Velayati warned.
He further noted that while the US has learned aspects of history from Iran, “it has yet to understand the geography of power.”
In a historical reference, Velayati pointed to the era of Darius the Great, stating that ancient Persia had already achieved major engineering feats—such as connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through waterways-- when the ancestors of the Anglo-Saxons were still in the primitive stages of development.
The remarks come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in key maritime corridors, where control over strategic chokeholds remains central to global economic stability.
As Iran’s closure of the Hormuz Strait to enemy vessels has already put intense pressure on adversaries, the Islamic Republic has hinted at the prospect of additional momentous pressure with the potential closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another vital chokehold.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply normally passes, has effectively been shut down since the US-Israeli aggression against Iran in late February.
Hundreds of ships have reportedly remained anchored nearby, while global shipping companies and oil exporters have paused operations due to security concerns.
On Sunday, US President Trump renewed his threat to unleash “hell” on Iran if it continues to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, saying the US will destroy the country’s power plants and bridges.
