Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs has condemned the Israeli-US attacks on historical sites as a “systematic” violation of international law.

In a post on X on Sunday, Kazem Gharibabadi said attacks against museums and historical sites constitute an assault on part of “Iran’s civilizational identity” and on cultural property protected under international law.

“Damage to dozens of historical and cultural sites during the US-Israeli attacks shows that the scope of this aggression has extended to cultural heritage as well,” he wrote.

“This situation is a clear manifestation of the systematic violation of international law in its various dimensions by the US regime and the Israeli regime,” he added.

Iran: 56 historical sites damaged in US-Israeli assaults

In a report published by Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts on Saturday, regarding the state of Iran’s cultural and historical monuments since the start of the Israeli-US aggression, the ministry said that at least 56 museums and historically and culturally significant locations have been damaged.

The ministry condemned these attacks in the strongest of terms and warned that the international community must not remain silent in the face of these war crimes, otherwise it is complicit in the Israeli regime and the US committing these atrocities against Iran.

According to the 1954 Hague Convention, the 1977 Geneva Conventions, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and established international law, any attack on historical sites and cultural heritage is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and a clear example of a war crime.

The US and Israeli armed forces began their military aggression against Iran in late February by attacking 30 targets across Tehran, killing several senior Iranian officials, including the Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei.

Since then, Iranian armed forces have swiftly and decisively retaliated against the strikes by launching barrages of missiles and drones against Israeli-occupied territories as well as on US bases in the region.

According to Iran’s Ministry of Defense, Iran’s military has killed at least 600 American troops in various US bases since the start of the aggression

Iranian officials have stated that targeting US military bases in the region constitutes “legitimate self-defense.”

Referring to Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, they said that Iran has the legal right to defend itself against “acts of aggression” by the US or the Israeli regime.
