Defending champions Iran booked their place in the final of the 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup after defeating surprise package Iraq 4-2 in the semi-final on Thursday.
Iran, aiming for a record-extending 14th continental title, reached the final for the 15th time in the tournament’s 17 editions, continuing their dominance in Asian futsal.
Iraq took the lead midway through the first half when Salem Khadem broke through the Iranian defense and finished calmly past the goalkeeper. Iran responded quickly, however, as Mohammad Hossein Derakhshani converted from close range following a precise assist from Saeid Ahmadabbasi.
Seven minutes before the interval, Khadem struck again from a set-piece after a defensive lapse to restore Iraq’s lead. Iran levelled three minutes later through Behrooz Azimi, whose powerful long-range shot left the Iraqi goalkeeper with no chance.
Iran increased the pressure after the break and eventually took the lead when captain Hossein Tayebi scored five minutes into the second half. Tayebi later missed a penalty with seven minutes remaining, as the Iraqi goalkeeper made a save to keep his team in contention.
Any hopes of an Iraqi comeback were ended in the closing seconds when Salar Aghapour, the reigning Asian Futsal Player of the Year, scored Iran’s fourth goal to seal the victory.
Iran will face the winner of the other semifinal in the final of the tournament, which is being hosted by Indonesia.
