Iran dismisses Nazi-style propaganda on riot death toll

An undated photograph shared on social media depicts scenes from early January riots in Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has dismissed a recent claim that approximately 30,000 people were killed during the recent foreign-backed riots in the country.

Baghaei said on Sunday that the figure, which appeared in a recent post on X by Open Source Intel, was reminiscent of the methods used in Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler, who relied on the relentless repetition of a "Big Lie."

“A Hitler-style BIG LIE: isn't this the number they planned to kill in the streets of Iran?!” Baghaei said in a post on his own X account.

He referenced reports alleging foreign-backed rioters sought to kill a large population of civilians and blame the government.

“They failed, though, and now they're trying to FAKE it in the media. Truly vicious!” his post continued.

Official Iranian government figures report that more than 3,000 people were killed in riots and terrorist acts across cities and towns in early January.

The riots escalated on January 8 and continued for several days, following peaceful protests in Iranian bazaars and markets where traders called for government action to halt the devaluation of the Iranian rial.

The violence resulted in extensive damage to public and private property, with widespread destruction of shops, government institutions, and public service facilities.

Iranian authorities have said that US and Israeli intelligence agencies were directly involved, providing funding, training, and media support to rioters and armed terrorists acting on the streets.
