India's premier cricket league suspended amid tensions, cross-border clashes with Pakistan

The remainder of IPL 2025 has been suspended for a week.

India has suspended its top cricket tournament, the Indian Premier League (IPL), for a week over rising tensions with Pakistan.

The IPL Governing Council made the decision on Friday “after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans."

"The remainder of ongoing IPL 2025 suspended with immediate effect for one week,” the IPL statement read.

This year's IPL, which attracts many of the top players in the world, was scheduled to end on May 25 in Kolkata.

The suspension comes amid flight disruptions in northern and western parts of India, with about 24 airports across the country have been closed for commercial flights till May 10.

"Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders," the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.

Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala was abandoned midway after air raid sirens were sounded in nearby cities.

Also on Thursday, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) relocated the remainder of its season to the United Arab Emirates after a drone fell within the Rawalpindi Stadium complex, which Pakistan says was from India.

Tensions between the neighbors have escalated following a deadly terror attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, predominantly Hindu tourists.

Pakistan has denied any involvement and has called for an impartial international investigation.
