South Korea appeared destined for a sharp turn to the left in the upcoming presidential election as Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung enjoys a substantial lead in polls.
But now, former prime minister, Han Duck-soo, has tossed his hat in the ring, and the race narrowed, as Han seeks to unify conservatives and centrists. Under Han, the country will likely prioritize its alliance with the US, while Lee has criticized the US alliance and cooperation in its China containment strategy, and seeks to engage with the DPRK.
