The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned a terrorist attack in the tourist resort of Pahalgam, India, which left over two dozen people dead and a number of others injured.

Esmaeil Baghaei described the terrorist act as a grave crime that violates all legal norms, both international and human rights standards.

He expressed sympathy for the victims' families and offered condolences to the government and people of India, wishing the injured a speedy recovery and good health.

Baghaei, reiterating the steadfast position of Iran in condemning all forms and manifestations of terrorism, emphasized the need to further strengthen cooperation and coordination at various regional and international levels to prevent and combat terrorism, as well as to prosecute and punish those responsible for and instigating terrorist actions.

At least 24 people were killed Tuesday in Indian-administered Kashmir when gunmen opened fire on tourists, in the region's deadliest attack on civilians since 2000.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi decried the "heinous act" in the summer retreat of Pahalgam, pledging that the attackers "will be brought to justice".

The killings come a day after Modi met with US Vice President JD Vance, who is on a four-day tour of India with his wife and children.

The attack targeted tourists in Pahalgam, which lies 90 kilometers by road from the key city of Srinagar.

No group has claimed responsibility, but rebels in the region have waged an insurgency since 1989.

They are seeking independence or a merger with Pakistan, which controls a smaller part of the Kashmir region and, like India, claims it in full.
