Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have separately offered their condolences following the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88.
In a message on Monday, Pezeshkian said Pope Francis, as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, dedicated his entire life to spreading the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The Pope made fruitful and lasting efforts to promote global peace, security, justice, freedom, and interaction among religions, the president said.
Humanitarian positions against inhumane behavior in the world, particularly his clear stance in condemnation of the Israeli regime’s genocide in Gaza and his call to end the massacre of innocent Palestinian women and children, were among the leading features of the Pope, Pezeshkian said.
The Iranian president said all awakened consciences and freedom seekers of the world will always remember the Pope.
He added that on behalf of the Iranian people, who have always been at the forefront of establishing global peace, security, dialogue, and solidarity among religions, honor his memory.
Pezeshkian prayed that Pope’s soul rest in eternal peace.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, said Pope Francis died Monday morning.
The pontiff’s death came one day after he made a brief appearance before thousands of people gathered at the Vatican’s St Peter’s Square for Easter Sunday.
The Pope, who suffered from chronic lung disease, was hospitalized in February for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia.
After five weeks of treatment, he was discharged from the hospital last month.
In a post on his X account, Araghchi said on behalf of the Iranian people, he extends his heartfelt condolences to the global community, especially the devoted followers of Pope Francis, as they mourn this profound loss.
