Sanders dismisses Republicans’ ‘horrific’ calls for Zelensky to resign

US Senator Bernie Sanders

Independent US Senator Bernie Sanders has dismissed as “horrific” the Republican senators’ claims that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has to resign after his spat with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

Sanders made these comments on Sunday, as a response to pro-resignation remarks from his fellow US Senator Lindsey Graham, which in turn had been affirmed by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and Chairperson of the House Intelligence Committee Mike Turner.

“I think that is a horrific suggestion. Zelensky is leading a country, trying to defend democracy against an authoritarian dictator, Vladimir Putin,” Sanders said.

“I think millions of Americans are embarrassed, are ashamed that you have a president of the United States who says Ukraine started the war, that Zelensky is a dictator,” Sanders said, referring to Trump’s comments.

The comments from Republicans came after Zelensky’s fiery dispute with Trump and his Vice President JD Vance on Friday at the White House.

On February 28, Zelensky was in Washington to sign a deal that would give 50 percent of the country’s oil and rare minerals to the US.

The meeting, however, turned into a heated debate after he indirectly criticized the foreign policy of the Trump administration. In response, Trump and Vance accused Zelensky of being ungrateful and disrespectful toward the US.

In an interview, Turner said, “Instead of taking that win, Zelensky turned it into a debate on American security guarantees [on the] peace negotiations.”

Since then, Zelensky and his European allies have not backed down from their position. Instead, they have sharply criticized the Trump administration’s conciliatory diplomacy towards Russia.

They have repeatedly said that they will not accept any peace deal that does not include their position and the future security of Ukraine.
