Iran's Interim President Mohammad Mokhber says Tehran will spare no effort to help Sudan achieve independence, progress and peace.
Mokhber made the remarks in a Sunday meeting with Sudanese Foreign Minister Hussein Awad Ali, who is in Tehran to attend the funeral processions for President Ebrahim Raeisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six of their companions, who lost their lives in a helicopter crash on May 19.
He added that the late Iranian president and foreign minister played an effective role in promoting Iran's ties with Muslim countries.
"As the Islamic Republic of Iran's fundamental policy, this approach will be continued," Mokhber emphasized.
He noted that Iran's strategic policy attaches importance to the concerns of Muslim nations and countries.
Mokhber thanked Sudan's government and nation for expressing sympathy with Iran over the tragic incident.
The Sudanese foreign minister, for his part, said the strong and efficient system of the Islamic Republic is like a stronghold that will protect the country in the face of big and heavy events.
Awad Ali said ties between Tehran and Khartoum are based on Islamic and humanitarian bases and friendship between the two nations.
Back in October 2023, Iran and Sudan agreed to restore diplomatic relations after seven years to serve the two countries' interests.
Tehran and Khartoum decided to restore relations after Iran and Saudi Arabia signed a China-brokered agreement in March 2023 to resume ties following a seven-year break.
In a statement in October 2023, Iran's Foreign Ministry said, Tehran and Khartoum agreed to develop cordial relations "based on mutual respect for sovereignty, equality, common interests and peaceful coexistence."
Riyadh closed its diplomatic missions in Tehran in 2016 after they were ransacked by protesters enraged by the Saudi execution of top Shia cleric Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.
Iran, Sudan agree to expedite reopening of embassies
In a significant diplomatic development, Iran and Sudan on Saturday agreed to expedite the reopening of their embassies in each other's capitals.
The decision was made in a meeting with Iran's Interim Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani and Awad Ali in Tehran.
According to the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, the top Iranian and Sudanese diplomats agreed to speed up the completion of the opening of the two countries’ embassies in a bid to help promote relations to the highest levels.
They discussed possible ways to expand relations in all fields.
