A senior Iranian diplomat assures the United Nations that the government will take every legal measure to ensure the proper management of state affairs after the passing of President Ebrahim Raeisi and his companions in a helicopter crash.

Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani on Monday wrote a letter to the UN Security Council regarding the tragic martyrdom of the Iranian president, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six others accompanying them in a helicopter crash incident on Sunday in a mountainous region in East Azarbaijan Province amid inclement weather condition.

He said the tragic incident happened as Raeisi and his entourage were returning after attending, alongside Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, the inauguration of Qiz-Qalasi Dam, a joint project between Tehran and Baku on the Aras transboundary border river.

"As the Iranian nation mourns this tragic loss, every measure is taken by the government in accordance with the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran to ensure the proper management of state affairs in the absence of the President," Iravani said.

He pointed to the assumption of the president's duties by the first vice president as per the Iranian Constitution and with the approval of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and added that Mohammad Mokhber will remain in place until a new president is elected within a maximum period of 50 days.

In addition, he added, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Bagheri Kani has also been appointed as the acting foreign minister based on the decision of the cabinet on Monday.

"We trust that the United Nations will join us in honoring their memory and upholding the principles they worked so tirelessly to advance," Iravani wrote.

"Your support and the support of the international community are crucial as we strive to overcome this tragedy and continue on the path of peace and development."

He described President Raeisi as a "dedicated politician" who was widely respected for his tireless efforts to foster good neighborliness, build confidence and promote dialogue both within the region and beyond.

The president's commitment to peace, stability, and development was unwavering, the Iranian ambassador emphasized.

As a distinguished diplomat, Amir-Abdollahian was highly regarded for his contributions to regional diplomacy, international cooperation and the principles of good neighborliness, he noted.

"The loss of these key figures, along with their dedicated team, has plunged our nation into deep mourning and sorrow," he said.

He noted that Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei had announced five days of national mourning to commemorate the victims of the sad incident.

In a message on Monday, Ayatollah Khamenei said the tragic incident happened when Raeisi and his team were making efforts to serve the Iranian people.

The Leader added that the entire period of responsibility of this noble and devoted man, both during the short term of the presidency and before that, was completely spent in non-stop efforts to serve the people, the country and Islam.
