Duke University commencement speech prompts walkout over speaker's Israel support
Dozens of students walked out of Duke University's commencement ceremony on Sunday, some of them chanting "free Palestine," to protest its guest speaker, comedian Jerry Seinfeld, for supporting Israel throughout the war in Gaza.
Seinfeld has visited Israel and vocally supported it since October 7, 2023 when the regime's genocidal war on the blockaded Gaza Strip began.
At least 35,034 civilians, most of them women and children, have been killed so far as a result of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza, which has left 78,755 Palestinians injured.
The walkout was the latest manifestation of protests that have roiled US campuses as students call for universities to divest from arms suppliers and other companies profiting from the Israeli war on Gaza. They also want amnesty for students and faculty members who have been disciplined or fired for taking part in anti-Israel protests.
