Iran Greco-Roman wrestling team wins Asian championship

Iran’s Mhammad Hadi Saravi won the championship title in the 97-kilogram weight class of the Greco-Roman category of 2024 Asian Wrestling Championships on April 16, 2024 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Iran’s men Greco-Roman wrestling team has won the championship title in the 2024 Asian Wrestling Championships in Kyrgyzstan four days after Iranian freestyle wrestlers won the same title in their own category.

The Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers bagged two gold medals in 67kg and 97kg, two silver medals in 72kg and 82kg and one bronze medal in the 60kg weight classes of the games in Bishkek on Tuesday.

The team had won two gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal in the 87kg, 130kg, 55kg and 63kg weight classes, respectively, on Monday.

It was Iran’s 16th championship title in 28 rounds of Asian Greco-Roman wrestling competitions. The country has finished runner-up in seven other rounds and third in the remaining five.

The title came four days after Iranian freestyle wrestlers were also crowned continental champions in Bishkek with five gold medals and three bronze medals.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi issued a message to congratulate the Greco-Roman wrestlers on their success, saying their “shining victory” was another sign that the country’s youth are always on top when it comes to “conquering the peaks of triumph”.
