As ceasefire negotiations continue in Cairo, Egypt, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is on his way to the region in what would be the fifth visit of Americas top diplomat to the Middle East since October 7th.
On Blinkens agenda is a de-escalation of tensions, as well as helping the US prepare the ground for Gazas post-bombardment reconstruction and governance, as well as attempts to ramp up the aid response. Unsurprisingly, many liken Blinkens role to that of the chief arsonist returning to the scene of the fire.
The US was the first country to announce it would be pausing its funding for Gazas chief aid relief agency, UNWRA, just hours after the ICJs interim ruling parroting the Israeli line that organizations staffers were amongst the numbers who participated in Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. Thanks to this position, 70% of the aid agencys funding is under threat, with a famine inevitable. As Palestinians pay the price of global dithering, will any real cessation of violence come in time to save Palestinian lives?
