Iran: US veto of UN resolution on Gaza ceasefire a vote for continuation of Israeli savagery; UNSC at dead-end

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani

Iran says the United States’ move to veto a UN resolution calling for an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza was in fact a vote for the continuation of the Israeli regime’s brutality against the Palestinian people.

Nasser Kan’ani made the remarks in his weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday after the US used its veto in the United Nations Security Council on Friday to block a draft resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

“The US government showed that it stands alone in the face of the international community and does not shy away from being alone in supporting the Zionist regime,” he said.

By vetoing the UN resolution, he added, the US showed that it did not just cast a negative vote to stop Israel’s war in Gaza, but also voted for the continuation of barbarism against the oppressed Palestinian nation.

He hailed the UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s “responsible action” regarding the situation in Gaza which drew the Security Council’s attention to the issue and called on the council to take a swift move to maintain international peace and security.

Kan’ani emphasized that the US resisted the world and the UN chief’s demand for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza by defying the resolution and once again showed its full complicity in the Israeli regime’s crimes.

He reiterated Iran’s strong condemnation of the US move and said, “The American government is not part of the solution to the Gaza war, but is part of the continuation of the genocide against the people of Gaza.”

Thirteen Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates, while the United Kingdom abstained.

The General Assembly, where the US has no veto power, overwhelmingly supported a humanitarian ceasefire. On October 26, the assembly approved the ceasefire with 120 votes in favor and only 14 against the non-binding resolution.

Kan’ani further said that the Security Council is not able to fulfill its duty to ensure global peace and security and stop the war and failed to take a measure at the current sensitive juncture.

He added that the US vetoing of the resolution proves that the Security Council has reached an impasse and is incapable of fulfilling its duty.

The spokesman emphasized that Iran has repeatedly announced that the Palestinian people are the only party that has the right and can decide on their own fate.

‘Israel a threat to humanity’

Earlier, Kan'ani said in a post on his X account that the Israeli crimes and recent remarks of Israeli officials exposed the inhumane and racist nature of the Tel Aviv regime, laying it ever more "bare" before the world.

He recounted “the actions of the Zionist regime's military in stripping and 'publishing images of naked civilian Palestinian captives,' the deputy mayor of the Occupied al-Quds calling on Tel Aviv authorities to 'bury Palestinian prisoners alive,' the Israeli regime's minister of war describing Palestinians as 'human animals,' and the regime's minister of heritage offering to drop a nuclear bomb on Gaza.”

Kan'ani said the apartheid regime of Israel is a threat to humanity and global peace and security.

Israel waged the war on Gaza after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since the start of the brutal aggression, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 17,997 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 49,229 others.

Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under the rubble in Gaza, which is under “complete siege” by Israel.
