Iran military might

Iran’s armed forces have held military parades across the country on the first day of the Sacred Defense Week. That’s an occasion marking the start of an eight-year war imposed on Iran in the 1980s by then Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Different units of the Iranian army, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, law enforcement forces and Basij volunteer forces participated. In the capital Tehran, the military parade was held at Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum, with top military brass in attendance. Representatives of different Iranian ethnic groups including Kurds and Arabs took part in the event. Military attachés of the countries which have embassies in Iran attended as well. In September 1980, Saddam launched the war on Iran. The US and some other western countries assisted the Iraqi dictator and provided him with advanced weapons.

US arming Ukraine

President Joe Biden says the United States will provide Ukraine with a new military aid package and the first Abrams tanks. Biden was speaking at the White House alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the Defense Department, the new batch of military assistance is valued at $325mn. The package, however, does not include the long-range missiles that Kiev has repeatedly requested. The US has been leading a coalition of Western states arming Ukraine since the beginning of its war with Russia in February 2022. It has provided Ukraine with tens of billions of dollars in military aid so far. Russia has repeatedly warned that the influx of Western weapons will only prolong the war and add to the suffering of Ukrainian people.
