Pakistani women burn bills in protest against soaring electricity prices

Hundreds of women took to the streets in Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi on August 31 to protest against soaring electricity prices.

About 1000 women, holding banners and placards and some even burning electricity bills, gathered on one of the main streets of the city in a protest organized by major Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami.

There have been sporadic protests across the country after consumers received July power bills following a recent increase in electricity prices and taxes, a key demand of the International Monetary Fund for revival of a long-stalled financial assistance package.
