‘Russia faces treason’

Tensions are ratcheting up between Moscow and a mercenary group fighting alongside the Russian military in the Ukraine war. The Russian Defense Ministry says Wagner fighters have been deceived into an armed rebellion by the group’s chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has vowed to topple Russian military leaders. The ministry said Prigozhin has dragged members of the mercenary group into a criminal adventure. It has urged Wagner fighters to return to their bases, saying it will guarantee their safety. Moscow has also declared an anti-terrorist operation regime in and around the capital Moscow. The Kremlin has called for Prigozhin’s arrest and opened a criminal case against him amid the apparent mutiny. The chief of the Wagner group says its forces have entered Russia from Ukraine and gained control of all military sites in Rostov-on-Don. He has demanded that Russia’s Defense Minister and a top general come to meet him in the southern city. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin says his country is facing treason, adding that Moscow will give a harsh response to traitors. In a televised address, Putin said the armed rebellion staged by the Wagner mercenary group is "a stab in the back to Russia". He called the mutiny a deadly threat to Russia and said the country would defend its citizens against all threats. He underlined that those who seek to create chaos will fail. Putin issued the warning after the chief of the Wagner group vowed to overthrow Russia's military leadership and claimed to have control over a key military headquarters in the south.

Denmark charges assailant

The Danish Prosecutor’s Office has charged a man who attacked the Iranian Embassy in Copenhagen last year with physical assault and an attempt on the Iranian ambassador’s life. In a statement, the office said the 33-year-old assailant was charged with carrying out a violent, merciless and dangerous attack on the Iranian diplomat. The attacker is also charged with damaging the embassy building and vehicles parked in the vicinity. On October 7, 2022, the knife-wielding assailant broke into the premise of the embassy and attacked the Iranian ambassador. However, the diplomat emerged unharmed as the attack was foiled by one of the embassy staff members. The attacker was then arrested by the Danish police and spent a long time in a psychiatric hospital.

Palestinian killed

Israeli forces have killed yet another Palestinian. This time at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank. The young Palestinian was killed by live bullets fired by Israeli troops at the Qalandia checkpoint, north of al-Quds. Israeli media claim the Palestinian arrived at the checkpoint on foot from the West Bank carrying a rifle. He then reportedly opened fire at Israeli troopers. At least two Israelis including a soldier were reportedly injured in the shooting operation. According to the Israeli media, the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Fatah Movement, took responsibility for the incident. There has been a significant escalation in the occupied West Bank and Al-Quds in recent months as a result of the regime’s ongoing atrocities against the Palestinians.
