Russia bans more EU officials over new anti-Moscow sanctions
Russia says it is denying entry to more European officials in response to a decision by the European Union to impose new sanctions on Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine.
"In response to these unfriendly actions, the Russian side has significantly expanded the list of representatives of European institutions and EU member states who... are prohibited from entering the territory of our state," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
"We confirm that any unfriendly actions taken by Western countries will continue to receive a timely and adequate response."
The European Union this week agreed to impose its 11th package of sanctions against Russia over its “special military operation” in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
The package includes measures aimed at trade, transport and energy, in addition to punitive measures against 100 individuals and entities subject to an asset freeze.
Senior Russian military officials, decision makers on the war, judges, and businesspersons, in addition to Russian IT companies, banks and entities working with the Russian armed forces, were listed in the 11th package.
EU leaders claim the sanctions have dealt a considerable blow to Moscow's political and economic capacity.
Moscow rejects the claim, saying the EU sanctions have backfired and weakened the bloc's economy, putting pressure on European nations.
The EU's military support for Kiev has further exacerbated the situation for the bloc's economy and added pressure on European nations amid the souring inflation and the cost-of-living crisis in EU states.
