Western long-range missiles to Ukraine will fuel 'spiraling tension': Russia
Russia has once again criticized the West for supplying Ukraine with weapons, warning that any supply of long-range missiles to Kiev by France and Germany would lead to a further round of "spiraling tension" in the ongoing conflict.
The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the remarks on Sunday, following reports that Germany and France plan to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles.
"We are already starting to see discussions about deliveries from France and Germany of missiles with a range of 500 km or more," Peskov said.
"This is a completely different weapon which will lead to, let's say, another round of spiraling tension," he added.
Peskov further noted that NATO member countries have effectively become direct parties to the Ukraine conflict, reiterating that Russia would continue its operations in the former Soviet state until the "job is done... There is no alternative.”
Back in May, Germany said it has received an official request from Ukraine to provide it with Taurus air-to-surface missiles, which would allow Kiev to strike well inside the Russian territory with their range of more than 500 kilometers.
French President Emmanuel Macron also said France will give Ukraine missiles with a range allowing it to carry out its long-anticipated counteroffensive.
Kiev has formerly used UK-made Storm Shadow to strike Russian supply depots and command posts deep behind the frontline in Russian-controlled territory in eastern Ukraine since May.
Earlier in the month, Russia also said Ukraine used Britain’s Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles to strike civilian targets in the Russian-controlled territory.
Moscow has constantly warned the West against providing Ukraine with longer-range missiles, saying the move will escalate the war.
The West, however, continues to provide Ukraine with military equipment worth tens of billions of dollars since Russia began its military campaign in Ukraine in February last year.
