Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi has congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election victory, calling it a testament to the enduring trust that the Turkish people have placed in their leader.

In his message on Sunday, President Raeisi expressed confidence that relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Turkey will further strengthen during Erdogan's new term in office.

The president noted that the relationship between the two neighboring countries were based on strong historical, cultural, religious bonds as well as good neighborliness, mutual respect, and shared interests.

The close cooperation between Iran and Turkey, Raeisi said in his message, will provide even “more favorable conditions” for promoting peace, stability, and development in the region.

Erdogan declared victory in Sunday’s historic runoff and thanked Turkish voters for giving him a mandate to govern the country for the next five years.

“We will be ruling the country for the coming five years,” Erdogan told his supporters atop a bus in his home district in Istanbul. “God willing, we will be deserving of your trust.”

The runoff was held after neither Erdogan nor his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu could secure more than 50 percent of the votes required for an outright victory in the first round on May 14.

with almost all the votes counted on Sunday evening, Erdogan won with more than 52 percent of the votes, while Kilicdaroglu got nearly 48 percent, state media reported.

Turkey's Supreme Election Council will publish the official result.
