Iran, India reaffirm commitment to fight terrorism, establish regional peace, security

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani (1st L) and his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval (1st R) meet in Tehran on May 1, 2023.

Iran and India have issued a joint statement, reaffirming their commitment to continue fighting terrorism and help establish regional peace and security.

The statement was signed by Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani and his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, in Tehran on Monday.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to fight terrorism in all its forms in order to help establish regional peace, stability and security.

They also vowed to boost cooperation in confronting regional and global challenges, while emphasizing the need to review new global developments in order to bolster multilateralism.

Further strengthening of cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels was another important highlight of the statement.

The two sides also mentioned transportation routes as a main element of regional integration and collective welfare of regional people, while mentioning the development project for the Iranian port city of Chabahar as a symbol of their cooperation.

Another important point covered by the statement was the need to boost joint efforts with Russia and other countries in Central Asia and Caucasus to promote the existing transportation corridors, especially the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), and other transportation routes.

In a meeting with Doval earlier in the day, Iran's President Ebrahim Raeisi said the Islamic Republic and India can influence the changes caused by the new world order that is currently emerging.

Raeisi emphasized that global conditions are changing and a new world order is emerging, adding, "In the course of the ongoing global changes, regional and international organizations, especially the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the BRICS [group of countries] can be very effective in view of their remarkable power and resources."
