Canada has imposed additional sanctions on Iran, targeting the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and law enforcement forces over what Ottawa claims to be systematic human rights violations.

According to a statement by the Canadian government, the new sanctions include 12 Iranian individuals.

Ottawa has accused the sanctioned individuals of suppression of demonstrations across Kurdish areas of western Iran following the death of a young Iranian woman in September last year.

The targeted officials include the governor of Kordestan Province and the commander of Basij volunteer forces in Sanandaj, the capital city of that province.

The sanctions prohibit dealings with the listed individuals, effectively freezing any assets they may hold in Canada. The sanctioned individuals are also inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Canada had previously placed sanctions against Iranian officials and entities, but experts have questioned how effective they are.

Foreign-backed riots broke out in Iran in mid-September after the death of a 22-year-old Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini. She fainted at a police station in Tehran and was pronounced dead three days later at the hospital. An official report by Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization concluded that Amini’s death was caused by illness rather than alleged blows to the head or other vital body organs.

Iran’s intelligence community has said several countries, including the United States and the UK, have used their spy and propaganda apparatuses to provoke violent riots in the country.

Rioters went on a rampage, brutally attacking security officers and causing massive damage to public property. Dozens of people and security personnel were killed in the riots.
