Iran, Iraq to expand defense cooperation

Iran's Defense Minister salutes during an official ceremony to welcome his Iraqi counterpart, Thabet Muhammad Saeed Al Abbasi. 

He visited Tehran as Iran and Iraq are eyeing regional security and stability through stronger defense cooperation, with both sides emphasizing border security.

The Iranian defense minister, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Gharaei Ashtiani, also stressed that the Islamic Republic will not allow its borders to be threatened. He described the presence of extra-regional forces and the Zionist regime in particular, as the main threats not just to Iraq itself but also to regional security. Meanwhile, the Iraqi defense minister voiced Baghdad’s readiness in strengthening ties with Tehran.

Tehran has had good and high-level relations with neighboring countries, particularly Iraq in the past years, reiterating that international ties and the improvement of ties with neighbors are among the most important areas of Iran's foreign policy.

Iran has made great achievements in its defense capabilities and has reached a level where it is considered self-sufficient. The Defense Minister reiterated that Iran is prepared to share its valuable experiences with the Iraqi side.
