Ivanka Trump, the daughter of former US President Donald Trump, and her husband Jared Kushner have been subpoenaed by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

US media reported that Smith is locked in at least eight confidential legal battles that aim to unveil some of the most closely held secrets regarding President Trump’s actions after the 2020 election and mishandling of classified government documents.

However, the recent subpoenas handed to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were specifically related to the probe of the Jan. 6 2021 riot on Capitol Hill and the activities leading up to that day by the former president and his loyalists who attempted to seize Congress and overturn the 2020 election that was won by Joe Biden.Ivanka and Jared worked as senior White House advisers to President Trump during his four years in office and are considered two of his most trusted relatives.

The decision to subpoena Ivanka and Jared underscores how deeply into President Trump’s inner circle, including closest family members, Smith is reaching and is the latest sign that no potential high-level witness is off limits.

Smith, earlier this month, subpoenaed former US Vice President Mike Pence.

Smith subpoenaed Pence to testify before the grand jury.

However, Pence plans to resist the subpoena, invoking his role as the president of the Senate to argue that it violates the “speech or debate” clause of the US Constitution.
