This is the first oil refinery in the Middle East. Located in Iran's southwestern city of Abadan near the western coast of the Persian Gulf, the Abadan Refinery was launched in 1912.

However, due to the deterioration of its old plants, it has undergone fundamental renovation since 2005, aiming to optimize the quality of its products and stabilize its processing capacity at 360,000 barrels per day.

The second renovation phase with a capacity of 210,000 bpds needs 2.6 billion euros to be accomplished, but due to the Western sanctions, the project's financial resources faced challenges.

All of the products at the new phase of the Abadan Refinery will be produced with a Euro-5 standard, which makes them more eco-friendly.

Phase two of the Abadan Refinery will include the construction of hydrogen production units, hydrocrackers, a liquefied petroleum gas distillation unit and ancillary facilities.

The Abadan Refinery enjoys the title of the oldest refinery in Iran and the Middle East, but despite multiple renovation processes, it is still old. Its authorities are now seriously trying to modernize it, in which case it will turn into an energy hub in the country by 2025.
