2022 Wrestling World Cup: Iran finish 2nd, losing final 6-4 to USA

Ali Savadkouhi scored an epic win over Olympic and 6-time World Champion, Jordan Burroughs, but Team Iran came short against the US and relinquished the World Cup title to the hosts.

The top two teams in freestyle wrestling, Iran and the USA, made the finals in Iowa. Burroughs had never lost at home to a non-American wrestler. He had never lost in a World Cup. And no Iranian wrestler had ever beaten him.

All that changed, when 79kg freestyler Savadkouhi used a takedown to gut in a 6-6 criteria win over the 34-year-old on Sunday. However, his feat and three more wins by Rahman Amouzad, Mohmmad Sadegh Firouzpour and Amir Reza Masoumi in the 65, 74 and 125kg divisions, respectively, were not enough to propel Iran to the World Cup title, as they lost 6-4 and finished second.

Meanwhile, the All-World team beat Georgia 8-2, and finished with a Bronze Medal on its debut.
