UK expanding walkouts

In the UK, the General Trade Union says over 10,000 ambulance workers and health service staff have planned to go on strike in late December over pay disputes.  The union has accused the government of ignoring pleas for a rise in wages that matches the soaring inflation. The planned walkout is the latest in a series of industrial actions the country has witnessed since summer. Just last week, the National Union of rail maritime and transport workers said more than 4,000 would stage strikes this month and in January, signaling major Christmas disruptions. Nurses, teachers, lawyers, train workers and dock workers are among the other groups that have staged strikes so far. The UK government is now considering using the military personnel to fill in for striking workers.

US China report

China has denounced as groundless speculation a US defense report showing that Beijing’s nuclear arsenal would triple by 2035. The Chinese Defense Ministry says the report distorts the country’s defense policy and military strategy. It added that it is the United States’ customary trick to hype up and exaggerate China's so-called military threat. The ministry said in fact it is the United States that should deeply review and reflect on its own nuclear policy. The Pentagon report says China would likely acquire around 15,000 nuclear warheads by 2035 at its current pace of expansion. That figure would still lag far behind the arsenals of the United States, which possesses several thousand nuclear warheads.

Russia-Ukraine war

Russia is accusing Ukraine of nuclear terrorism by what it calls attacks on the Zaporizhia nuclear plant. Sergei Shoigu said however that Russian forces are taking all measures to ensure the safety of the plant, which is Europe's largest nuclear facility. Ukraine has denied the allegations and blames Russia for targeting the plant. Russian forces have been in control of the facility from the first days of the Ukraine conflict. The plant has come under repeated shelling, with each side blaming the other for the attacks. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency is pushing to create a security zone around the plant amid fears of a nuclear disaster.
