Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that China would consider hosting the third Belt & Road Forum for International Cooperation in 2023.

The Chinese Belt & Road Forum for International Cooperation initiative has been presented by Xi as the revival of the ancient Silk Road for trade between the East and West.

Prior to the imposition of a COVID travel ban in China, the earlier Belt & Road Forums were held in 2017 and 2019, and drew leaders and officials from dozens of countries. China has recently begun to ease its COVID restrictions with many analysts predicting more significant opening up starting in March or April.

Xi, who was speaking on Friday at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) gathering in Bangkok, said China will consider holding the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation next year to provide fresh impetus for the development and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific and the world.

In his speech titled "Shouldering Responsibility and Working Together in Solidarity to Build an Asia-Pacific Community with a Shared Future", Xi said that "the Asia-Pacific is our home as well as the powerhouse of global economic growth." and called on world leaders and officials to bear in mind a shared future and make the Asia-Pacific a region where all are ready to help each other.

The Chinese president emphasized the need to enhance economic and technical cooperation, noting that China aims to advance economic development in a coordinated way.

Xi said Asia-Pacific countries were welcome to take an active part in the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and enhance practical cooperation in poverty reduction, food, energy and health, calling on world leaders and officials on all sides to view Asia-Pacific cooperation from a strategic and long-term perspective, and keep Asia-Pacific cooperation in the right direction.

He emphasized the need to act on the purposes and principles of APEC, while enhancing mutual trust, inclusiveness and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Xi urged all parties to follow the spirit of our Asia-Pacific family, look after one another like passengers in the same boat, and steadily move toward an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future.

The Chinese leader pointed out that the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held successfully last month, setting the course and providing the blueprint for China's development in the present and years that were to come

Xi said Beijing was ready to pursue peaceful coexistence and common development with all countries on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.

China will advance a broader agenda of opening up across more areas and in greater depth, follow the Chinese path to modernization, put in place new systems for a higher-standard open economy, and continue to share its development opportunities with the rest of the world, particularly with the rest of the Asia-Pacific region, Xi said.

Xi quoted a Thai proverb that goes, "You reap what you sow", noting that APEC economies have jointly sown the seed of the Putrajaya Vision and that it is time to cultivate, nurture, and foster the blossoming flower of common development of the Asia-Pacific.

The 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders' Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand was chaired by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha under the theme of "Open, Connect, Balance."
