US President Joe Biden recounted his trips to Afghanistan in a recent speech to war veterans, including one in 2008 in which he was stranded in snow. In his remarks, he repeatedly disparaged Afghanistan as a God-forsaken place. The Taliban say his words are out of frustration.

People here say nearly two decades of US presence in Afghanistan didn’t have any positive impacts on their lives. They say the American forces committed countless war crimes and destroyed basic infrastructure in many areas.

The US ended its occupation of Afghanistan in August 2021. But shortly after that, the Biden administration imposed sanctions on the country and froze billions of dollars’ worth of assets belonging to Afghanistan, leaving the country in a difficult economic situation.

People say the ongoing war in Afghanistan is an economic one. Many are striving to survive while billions of dollars of their assets are frozen by the US.
