2022 World Wrestling Championships: Iran finishes second as Amouzad takes 65KG gold

The Iranian team has concluded the 2022 World Wrestling Championships by adding a second gold to their tally on the final day of the freestyle event in Belgrade.

After Reza Atri lost the 61kg final to Japan’s Rei Higuchi by technical fall, Iran’s 65kg grappler Rahman Amouzad came up against USA’s first-time finalist Yianni Diakomihalis.

The two got tangled up in an opening scramble, which saw the American gain an 8-6 lead. But Rahman got a single-leg takedown to tie it up at the end of the first period and remained the aggressor in the second, getting a stepout and 2 takedowns to win 13-8 and give Iran a second gold medal of the championships.

Along with 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, Team Iran finished the freestyle competitions second on 150 points behind the USA’s 198, with Japan ending up on 3rd on 70 points.
